Prince Charles and Princess Diana married in 1981, but their marriage was not happy.

In 1995, the Princess of Wales spoke candidly about her troubled marriage in a TV interview. In it, she wondered if her then-husband should be king. Now, an editor has revealed that he spoke to Diana before this interview and she told him how she really felt about Charles taking over to the throne.

Princess Diana ‘only cared about William’s succession to the throne’

In October 2020, a documentary entitled Diana: the truth behind the interview examines some of what the princess said on her BBC Panorama interview and also reveals who she’s spoken to before.

Before her explosive interview with Martin Bashir, Diana spoke to Daily Telegraph editor-in-chief Sir Max Hastings and had equally surprising things to say (per The Daily Star).

In the documentary, Hastings recalls, “I spent the best part of two hours with Diana and she put on a wonderful show. It was absolutely captivating things.

He continued, “It first became clear how much she hated Charles… yes, she hated Charles. She said all she cared about was William’s succession to the throne and she told me, quite explicitly, “I don’t think Charles can do it. The result she wanted to see was that Charles would stand aside as the heir… and that William would occupy the throne. It was quite dynamic. “

Diana publicly doubted Prince Charles was fit to be king

Hastings’ claims are consistent with the public comments Diana made about Charles during the Panorama interview when she asked if he was fit for the job.

Diana told Bashir she didn’t know if the prince was made for such a “stuffy” role.

“Being Prince of Wales produces more freedom now, and being King would be a bit more suffocating,” the Princess said. “And because I know the character, I think the high level position, as I call it, would bring him huge limitations, and I don’t know if he could adapt to that.

After this interview aired, several members of the royal family were furious, including Queen Elizabeth II, who was very upset that her family and their affairs had been reduced to a soap opera. The monarch then decided that was enough and filed for divorce from his son and daughter-in-law, which they did in 1996.

William discovered he was going to be king at a young age when he heard it from other children at school. After learning about his fate, the Queen began to teach and train him for the role.

Over the years, however, some royal fans have noted that William never seemed delighted that he would one day be king. The reason is because of what has to happen first: his grandmother and father must die before they can ascend the throne.

No one wants to think about losing a loved one, but it will be William’s reality before he becomes the monarch. So while he may be a little hesitant about that day, that doesn’t mean he won’t fulfill the role he’s been preparing his whole life.
