Princess Diana knew Prince Charles and Camilla ‘were the real love’ and spoke with BBC Panorama because she ‘wanted her story there’ fearing a gagging clause in her divorce, said a royal correspondent.

Jennie Bond appeared in Lorraine this morning to discuss the Princess of Wales’ explosive interview with Martin Bashir in 1995.

The televised tell-all grabbed the headlines 25 years later amid new allegations by Diana’s brother Earl Spencer that then Panorama reporter Martin Bashir had shown her false financial documents to gain access to her.

Jennie said the Princess told her most of the information she revealed in the Panorama interview five months earlier, including that she believed the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall to be a ‘genuine love match ”.

The British journalist also asked Diana a year later why she attended the reunion, and said the princess admitted she feared a ‘gagging clause in her divorce’ and ‘wanted her story be published. ”

“ She had told me a lot about Panorama five months ago, we had a long reunion, just the two of us at Kensington Palace in her living room, ” Jennie said.

“And so what was in Panorama was widely known to me, but she asked me to keep it confidential.

Jennie added: “I have notebooks from that meeting … it’s June 95 and just as I wrote:” She says there have always been, since day one, three people in the wedding. She means Camilla. “

“She says she now understands that Charles and Camilla’s relationship was and still is one of true love and that it was always going to be stronger than any marriage Charles could have had.”

So she was very open during this interview with me, but she asked me, which is annoying, I have to say, to keep it confidential.

“ The very fact that she had told me so much information before … I think she was kinda ready to release this story. ”

The royal correspondent continued: “I asked her a year later, why did you do Panorama and she said: ‘I felt that divorce was imminent, it was going to be inevitable, and I thought there would be a gagging clause.

“I wanted to share my side of the story. [Mr Bashir] was there at the right time and in the right place. “‘

The divorce of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana was officially finalized on August 24, 1996, after a very public dispute.

Jennie’s remarks come after it emerged over the weekend that royal assistants and others allegedly smeared by Mr Bashir to get his scoop of Princess Diana could take legal action over ‘ “ serious damage ”.

Legal experts have said the BBC may even face a Scotland Yard investigation into the alleged falsehoods and lies the Panorama reporter used to deceive the Princess ahead of the famous 1995 interview.

Diana’s brother Earl Spencer is among those calling for an independent investigation after revealing the 32 lies he says Mr. Bashir fed the princess to win the interview.

In the weeks leading up to the program, the Earl was approached by Mr Bashir and, in what are believed to be new details, Charles now claims he was shown ‘fake bank statements’ linked to alleged payments made to two members of the royal household by the security services.

Allegations that further false financial documents relating to a former Earl employee were produced were examined by an internal BBC investigation in 1996, as it tried to determine whether the Princess had been misled or not – with one key piece of evidence, a note, suggesting she hadn’t.

Mr Bashir, now the BBC’s religion editor, is gravely ill with complications from Covid and is unable to respond to the count’s allegations, the BBC has said.

The BBC said it would investigate the count’s new allegations, but he would insist on an independent investigation and declined the company’s offer to look into his allegations.

In a previous statement, a BBC spokeswoman highlighted the apologies the Earl received from his chief executive for the fake documents relating to his former employee.

She said: ‘The BBC has apologized. We are happy to repeat these apologies. And while that was a quarter of a century ago, we are absolutely going to investigate, in a solid and fair manner, new and substantive information.

“We asked Earl Spencer to share more information with the BBC.

“ Unfortunately, we are currently embarrassed by the simple fact that we are not able to discuss all of this with Martin Bashir because he is gravely ill.

“When he’s doing well, of course we’ll investigate these new issues.”
