After three wonderful seasons of The crown, we’re finally going to have Princess Diana on our screens. The famous royal, played by Emma Corrin, is making her debut in season 4, which is expected to cover her marriage to Prince Charles and her adaptation to the royal family.
His entry follows the introduction of Camilla Shand (played by Emerald Fennell) in Season 3. In the series, Shand meets the Prince of Wales (played by Josh O’Connor) in a polo match, which would have took place in the early 70s. However, Charles’ first meeting with Diana Spencer didn’t come until a few years later in 1977, which we’ll likely see this season.
Charles and Diana met at the Spencer family home in Althorp when she was 16 and 29, according to The telegraph. He was a member of a shooting and a guest of his sister, Sarah Spencer, who was already a friend of his. “We kind of met in a plowed field,” Lady Diana recalls in an interview after their engagement in 1981, four years after they first met.
“I remember thinking about how a very cheerful, fun and attractive 16 year old she was,” recalls Charles in that same interview. “I mean, great fun, bouncy, and full of life and everything.” Diana added that her first impression of Charles was that he was “pretty amazing”.
The couple admitted that when they first met they had no idea they would end up getting engaged, but Prince Charles explained that he had “gradually” realized that Diana was the right one. He said that in the late summer and fall, before his proposal, he “began to realize what was going on in my mind and his in particular.”
When Diana first met Charles at Althorp, there was a dinner and a dance, and he approached her and asked her to show him the gallery. “For a 16-year-old, for someone like that, showing all the attention was just so amazed,” Diana later recalls in private tapes that were made public in the 2017 documentary. Diana: in her own words. “Why would someone like that care about me?”
They didn’t see each other much after this meeting. “It lasted about two years,” she explained. Charles even dated Diana’s sister Sarah from time to time. (“My sister was all over him like a bad rash.”) But when he celebrated his 30th birthday, he invited the two sisters to his party.
Things heated up again when Diana was invited to stay with her friend Philip de Pass when the Prince of Wales was also visiting. When the two had some time alone, Diana sympathized with Charles, remembering how he watched the funeral of Lord Mountbatten (Prince Philip’s “Uncle Dickie”). “And the next minute he gushed at me, practically,” she recalls in the tapes.
Although the couple shared a lot of phone calls and Charles invited Diana to hang out with him and the royals, they ultimately didn’t spend much time together before they got engaged. “We met 13 times and got married,” the princess revealed in the footage.
Charles and Diana married in 1981, welcomed two sons together (Prince William and Prince Harry), then divorced in 1996. Royal fans – and most of the general public – may already be familiar with the unfortunate story of love of the old couple, but The crown will bring it to life in its upcoming fourth season.
