Princess Diana’s brother responds to his portrayal on ‘the Crown’

The brother of the late Princess Diana opens up about his portrayal in the Netflix drama “The Crown”.

Earl Charles Spencer, 56, revealed on “Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh,” airing Sunday, November 22, that he felt uncomfortable about the show’s fourth season, which follows a fictional version of the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

“The Crown asked if they could film Althorp and I said no,” he explained, referring to the family’s ancestral home in Northamptonshire, England. “The problem for me is that people see a program like this and forget it’s fiction. They assume that, especially foreigners, I find Americans telling me that they watched “The Crown” as if they had taken a history lesson. Well, they didn’t.

Spencer went on to explain, “There’s a lot of guesswork and invention, isn’t it? You can hang it on the facts, but the elements in between are not facts. “

“I think it’s my duty to defend her when I can,” he said of his late sister. “She left me for example as guardian of her sons… so I have the impression that a trust was transmitted. And we grew up together, you know if you grow up with someone, they’re still that person no matter what happens to them later. So yes, I feel very passionately that I have a role to play in honoring his memory.

Spencer recently demanded an apology from the BBC in addition to an independent investigation into how Martin Bashir got the infamous 1995 interview with Princess Diana.

The interview was brought back to light 25 years later after the launch of the new television documentary, “Diana’s Interview: A Princess’s Revenge,” alleging that Bashir used dishonest tactics to gain her trust. The documentary claims the reporter asked a graphic designer to create fake bank statements which he then used to convince Spencer that royal employees were being paid to spy on his sister.

At the time, the interview was viewed by 20 million people as Princess Diana shared intimate details about her unhappy marriage to Prince Charles.

“The BBC takes this very seriously and we want to find out the truth,” said Tim Davie, managing director of the BBC. “We are in the process of commissioning a solid and independent investigation.”

In a statement released by Kensington Palace, Prince William said he “tentatively welcomes the investigation”.

“The independent investigation is a step in the right direction,” the statement said. “It should help establish the truth behind the actions that led to the Panorama interview and the subsequent decisions made by those at the BBC at the time.”
