The famous wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles came under intense scrutiny even before the public began to suspect it was falling apart, simply because they are a couple royal in the public eye. This meant that there was a vast photographic record of their wedding in which their separation wasn’t exactly invisible, especially if you looked closely. Royal photographer Kent Gavin, recently featured on BritBox’s The wedding of the century discussing his photograph of Diana’s wedding day, tells SheKnows that he could “definitely” see when the marriage started to fall apart, and points to a famous photo of Diana sitting alone in front of the Taj Mahal as an example of an image whose sad story tells a lot about the state of their union.
“One of the most famous photos ever taken was of her sitting in front of the Taj Mahal. It was about everything, ”he told SheKnows. “And a few years earlier I had taken a trip to India with Prince Charles and had sat her on that same cement stool where we posed Diana for this photo and at the press conference that night. said Charles, ‘someday, because this monument is about a man who loved this woman so much that he built it, I’m going to bring my wife back here.

“What happens?” Gavin continued. “Charles stayed up during a business meeting and Diana came down and sat down on her own, and this photo pretty much sums up the issues she was in.”

The photo was taken during the Prince and Princess of Wales’ royal tour of India in February 1992; they announced their separation in December and finalized their divorce in 1996. In 1995, when the famous Diana Panorama an interview took place for which the BBC has since apologized, details of the two partners’ infidelities were common knowledge – and this image of Diana alone became one more example of how lonely she felt in the wedding.
