The 29-year-old granddaughter of former Emperor Akihito and Komuro first announced their engagement in 2017. But the wedding date was postponed following a financial dispute between Komuro’s mother and her elder fiancĂ©.
Princess Mako and Komuro met while attending Tokyo International Christian University in 2012.
Prior to his introduction as a royal fiancĂ©, Komuro was better known as the “Prince of the Sea”, having participated in a beach tourism campaign for the town of Fujisawa, south of the capital.
Imperial Japanese law means that only male heirs are allowed to inherit the throne.
If the other single princesses in the family married commoners, they would also lose their royal status. This could leave the Imperial Family without enough members to carry out their public duties.
