Warning: Prisoners of Ghost Country spoilers to come.
Nicolas Cage had not planned to provide the marketing team for his latest film, Prisoners of Ghost Country, a quote for the poster when he proclaimed it “the craziest movie I’ve ever made”.
But that does mean something, given the value of the crazy recent entries in the “Cage Rage” subgenre that have included deliciously absurd and / or gore-drenched entries like Mandy (2018), Color out of space (2019) and Willy’s Wonderland (2021).
“I had read the script and met [director] Sion Sono, we haven’t even made the movie yet, ”the beloved 57-year-old actor tells us in a recent virtual interview (see above). “I said it in a magazine: this is going to be the craziest scenario I’ve ever done. And it turned into “the craziest movie I’ve ever made.” And I stand by that.
Kabuki’s western fantasy stars Cage as a hardened criminal in a dystopian future who has a chance to redeem himself when he’s tasked with saving the niece (Sofia Boutella) of a devious governor (Bill Moseley) from a frightening Mad Max-camping of the ian desert.
To ensure that Cage’s hero does not derail (or engage in any sexual activity), the governor incorporates detonators in his leather suit, two of which are attached to each of his testicles. Last spoiler alert… One of them explodes.
“Originally they wanted to delete this scene, even my manager wanted to delete it,” Cage reveals.
“I was like, ‘Well, no, because it’s kind of like what’s happening now. And these are dangerous waters but [with] sexual assault, you want to be extra careful. You don’t want to offend people. You don’t want to treat women that way. And I think this scene is like a microcosm of [the issue of sexual assault]. It’s like, ‘Watch out! Warning!’ That’s why I thought they should put it back.
At another point in the film, Cage shouts the word “testicle!” At the top of his lungs, with a vociferous all-in engagement that only Nicolas Cage could pull off.
“I literally wanted to knock him out of the Ball-park, ”he laughs.
Prisoners of Ghost Country is now in theaters and on VOD and digital.
