According to Deadline, the premise of the five-week reality show is: “Activists face each other in challenges to promote their causes, their success being measured by online engagement, social action, and contributions from people. hosts. “

Deadline spoke to Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans, who said: “Activist is a one-of-a-kind competition series that will inspire real change, as the series progresses from the United States to Rome for the ultimate militant challenge at the G20. Audiences will see activists’ passion and commitment to their causes put to the test as they call on world leaders to take urgent action to address the interconnected crises we face.

Well, that premise didn’t suit people. Many have called the program for a number of things – like being performative, disconnected, and cringe.

One person pointed out how bizarre it is for candidates to “satisfy an arbitrary set of metrics to please a disconnected set of wealthy people” – aka those mega-rich celebrities.

People even came up with what-if scenarios for how the series would unfold:

After the backlash, Global Citizen provided Deadline with a statement. It reads:

Activist highlights people who have done their life’s work to change the world for the better, as well as the incredible and often inspiring work they do on the ground in their communities. “

We’ll keep you posted if any of the celebrities involved speak up as well.
