Hundreds of people gathered for an event dubbed the “March for Trump / Save America” earlier today, with thousands more expected to gather near the Capitol on Wednesday ahead of the Congressional vote to certify the outcome of the presidential election.
DC police and federal officials have said in recent days that they are monitoring the presence of extremist groups among crowds expected to attend protests in the nation’s capital this week. The National Guard has been deployed to the district as a precautionary measure.
Earlier in the week, the leader of the Proud Boys, an extremist hate group, was arrested by DC police and charged with vandalism against a historically black church in the city during an earlier protest.
