Second day of MTG The Mythic Championship II in London has taken a fierce start, full of controversy over players who do not announce their steps and the confusion caused by new War of the spark planeswalker cards. The anvil however fell when Yuuya Watanabe was disqualified before the first eight announcements.
Watanabe is no stranger to the MTG pro scene. He won MTG Player of the Year in 2009 and 2012, and was inducted into the Magic: the rally Hall of Fame in 2016.
Watanabe started the second day in force War of the spark limited project, pulling a big win against his opponent, Andrew Watts. A MTG The floor judge made a bad call when Watts asked how Watanabe's Sarhan, the Masterless, suffered damage as a four / four dragon. Watanabe, despite the fact that he is under the gun in time, won the victory.
Watanabe continued to win at the entrance of Modern Constructed, allowing him to rank among the top eight for the playoffs of Mythic Championship II. Shortly before the first eight announcements, however, officials said Watanabe was disqualified from the tournament.
according to Magic: the rally officials, a bridge check was carried out on lap 15 of Modern Constructed and a judge noted several problems with Watanabe's card sleeves. While playing on a Tron deck, Watanabe had several rounds of cards with similar notched marks.
All the power plants from Watanabe to Urza have been marked in a specific way. In addition, three Urza mines and one Urza tower bore similar marks on the sleeves. The judge then found a Urza mine and three Urza towers bearing marks different from those of the other group of four.
Because of the similarities in the marks and the power of the cards in a Tron deck, Watanabe was disqualified. Officials stated that the marks were not accidental and were likely placed there intentionally.
Wizards of the Coast issued a statement in which he discussed the disqualification, claiming that the incident would be the subject of a further investigation by the MPL. But Watanabe is still classified as an MPL player and is ready to compete in the new MPL league.
