FOXBORO – The Patriots took part in the first of three compulsory minicamp sessions Tuesday at Gillette Stadium, but the biggest story of the day was revealed after the release of their opponent, Austin Seferian-Jenkins.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, this publication was intended to allow him to focus on his personal problems, which is logical because he had been apologized to OTAs a few weeks ago and was not on the ground on Tuesday.
So where does that leave the Patriots in the position?
The depth chart currently includes Ben Watson, Matt LaCosse, Stephen Anderson, Ryan Izzo and Andrew Beck, and it's interesting to note that Watson is suspended for all four games of the season.
This is good news for Matt LaCosse, who seems well placed not only to be on the list, but also to contribute in the first four weeks and probably more. This also gives the other three, besides Watson, even more chances to be part of the team. But it would also not be a surprise to see the team make another move to the position.
Kyle Rudolph seems to have settled his dispute with the Vikings, but the Patriots may have to make one last effort before signing a new deal and offer a high choice in 2020 to the veteran. Patriots could certainly use it.
There are also not many free agent options worthy of the name, but the Patriots may have to find one. The names that come to my mind are Ryan Griffin and Lance Kendricks.
Normally losing Seferian-Jenkins at this point in the calendar would not be a big deal, but with Watson suspended for four games and Rob Gronkowski retiring, the job is not really very good.
Therefore, do not be surprised if additions are made between now and the training camp, because you have to.
