Dylan Groenewegen – a professional cyclist from the Netherlands – has just been hit with a 9-month ban for causing the terrible accident that left his rival in a coma.
The incident took place in August … Groenewegen, 27 tight dutch cyclist fellow Fabio Jakobsen against a wall in a final spring during the Tour of Poland – which caused Jakobsen to flip a signal and crash face to face against a solid barrier.
Jakobsen suffered serious injuries in the wreck – including “serious” injuries to her face – and was placed in a medically induced coma to help her recover.
Jakobsen also underwent reconstructive facial and jaw surgery, according to the AP.
Now the Union Cycliste Internationale has imposed a penalty – banning Groenewegen from competing for 9 months … meaning he won’t be able to race until May 7th.
Groenewegen issued a statement through its representatives saying: “The accident at the first stage of the Tour of Poland will forever be a black page in my career.”
He added: “I am following the news of Fabio’s recovery very closely. I can only hope that one day he will come back completely.”
