A new development diary from Project Mara details how developer Ninja Theory creates a photorealistic experience for their experimental horror game Xbox Series X.
In the video, titled Capturing Reality, lead creative ninja Tameem Antoniades explains in detail how the studio recreates a real apartment as the backdrop for Project Mara. He says, “We try to do a lot of things that we’ve never tried to do before and one of those things is obsessively capturing reality.”
To achieve these goals, the art team is looking to perfectly recreate a real-world apartment, which they seem to do a pretty good job of based on the in-engine footage revealed in the Dev Diary.
Part of this process is taking material samples from the apartment by photographing and scanning them and using them to create ‘procedural shaders and detailed maps’ to recreate these elements in the game.
Antoniades also discussed how the team recreated the entire apartment in the game, using a company called Clear Angle Studios, which helped create a “point cloud” of the apartment using LiDAR scanners. Antoniades describes this as “some of the best references we have ever seen”.
The result, aside from the aforementioned awesome engine images, is that Ninja Theory is changing the way it creates art in its games. As Antoniades explains: “Artists are not there just to create an object, they are there to create systems that can create an object and endless variations of that object.”
Project Mara was originally announced last January, with business manager Dom Matthews describing the experience as follows: “Based on accounts of real-life experiences and extensive research, our goal is to recreate the horrors of the mind. as precisely and realistic as possible. Project: Mara will be an experimental title and a showcase of what could become a new medium of storytelling. “
Looks like Project Mara’s photorealism will be put to some seriously spooky purposes. Hopefully we’ll find out more about a potential release date in the coming months.
