IS RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Agreement, it was unassailable. Brutal even by pre-season standards.
Thank goodness, the pre-season is over. The Redskins arrive in town a week after Sunday and we leave.
But according to the rules of the NFL, there must be 10 instant Roob sightings after each Eagles game. It's right there in the ABC.
So here we are after the Eagles' 6-0 defeat against the Jets in the final.
1. I thought Clayton Thorson was on the bubble before Thursday night, but yuck. It was really bad. He threw a 25-yard shot on a very open Michel Marken and made a nice run for a 14-yard gain to Alex Ellis, but other than that? He took a big step back from his performance against the Jaguars two weeks ago, the last time he played. Thorson played the whole game and finished 12-for-26 for 84 yards with an interception. It is not easy to throw 84 yards in an entire game. The rookie's fifth round pick seemed puzzled in the pocket, even when there was no pressure, and missed just too many easy shots. He was just terrible. The good news is that after this performance, he will have no trouble getting him through waivers and joining the training team.
2. Daeshon Hall will not only train the team, he will play too. I do not care what saves you play, three strip bags and four bags in total pre-season, it's impressive. Remember that this guy was a third-round pick just two years ago. The talent is at the rendezvous. It did not work in Carolina, but his talent is obvious. Hard to believe it was part of the Texans training last year when the Eagles took it back in mid-December. Great scouting done by professional Eagles staff.
3 As you watch Shareef Miller, keep in mind the last time the Eagles released a fourth-round pick after his rookie camp was in 1997 (Damien Robinson, who later became a Bucs starter). Assume the Eagles keep Hall behind Brandon Graham, Derek Barnett and Vinny Curry, leaving Miller and Josh Sweat, last year's fourth-round pick, fighting for a fifth-place finish. But what do you know? In fact, I think it's more likely that they keep all six than going out Sweat or Miller.
4 Speaking of Alex Ellis … I love this kid. He came here with the reputation of being a good blocker but not really a receiver, but he catches the ball very well. You saw the maniac that he did against the Jets. It was only five meters, but he had blinked like that since arriving here a week at training camp. Josh Perkins looks like TE3, but I'll keep Ellis on the training team.
5 T.J. Edwards can play. He had a difficult first week or 10 days but has been very good since. He made my list.
6 The Eagles tried a little to highlight Wendell Smallwood, but like everything else on Thursday night, it was not very good. Smallwood had a great 18-yard run early but was only five yards off his other six carries and fumbled, finishing 7-in-23. With Miles Sanders, Jordan Howard, Corey Clement, and Darren Sproles, Smallwood has no place in the lineup, and I thought you might be able to get a seven or six for him. He had stretches in his career where he was productive. But he certainly did nothing Thursday night to increase its value.
7. When you see a team becoming creative with a certain player, it usually means that it fits in with their plans, which is a sign that the Eagles plan to keep Greg Ward. He started an option pass in the Jacksonville game and had 15 yards on Thursday night. Make a nice cut, too. Ward did something to impress you every day in training and he did the same in the games. He must be here. He deserved it.
8 Alex Singleton played a lot of plays on Thursday night, and the former CFL linebacker may be a distance player, but he is a big hitter and usually seems to be in the right place. With the Eagles' injuries and the linebacker's lack of depth, I wonder if he could be a surprise Saturday at 53. Looks like a player.
9 Another interesting young man who stands out: the defensive tackle Kevin Wilkins, a non-recruited Rutgers beginner. He was very active and had a good camp. He's really a developing guy, but he's another guy who I hope will be back in the training team. Wilkins played five minutes from his home town of Hackensack.
ten. Finally, I think we can all agree that these games are an absolute joke. The NFL has a real credibility problem, and it will only get worse, as more and more coaches realize that there is no reason to play their part more, if at all, in these matches. There were literally 5,000 people at MetLife Stadium tonight and I do not see why they showed up. Whether it 's to add common practices or anything else, the NFL must find a way to get rid of at least one and perhaps two preparatory matches. These games are an embarrassment.
