As the 49ers training camp is in full swing, we got some roster moves and some practice nuggets that resulted in some big changes to our post-draft 53-man roster projection.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan and his coaching staff have their work cut out for them during the preseason as they try to sift through a slew of roster battles and players vying for places at the rear of the line-up.
Here’s a look at our latest 53-man roster prediction ahead of the 49ers’ preseason opener on Saturday against the Chiefs. (The recruits in italics)
Jimmy garoppolo
Trey Lance
Nate sudfeld
Our pre-camp screenings had Josh Rosen as third QB, but the 2018 first-round pick struggled after a strong start to camp. Success in preseason games may ultimately determine who lands that last spot on the roster.
Rahim mostert
Trey’s sermon
Wayne gallman
Elie Mitchell
Jeff Wilson Jr. got injured in OTAs, so he’s off the roster for now. Mitchell, a sixth-round pick this year, has caught the attention of some reporters at camp because of his speed. Second-year undrafted free agent JaMycal Hasty is also in the mix here for the preseason.
Kyle juszczyk
Second-year UDFA Josh Hokit is the other fullback. Shanahan has said he needs to see Hokit in games before determining a role for him, although it’s hard to believe the 49ers are keeping two full-backs. They may aim to bring Hokit to the practice squad where he can work as insurance in case Juszczyk is not available.
Brandon Aïyuk
Deebo Samuel
Trent Sherfield
Mohamed sanu
Nsimba webster
Richie James Jr.
Jalen Hurd’s name is the most notable absence here. He hasn’t had a lot of work in team drills, and given how little he’s played in his two years in the league, this will be key to him earning a spot on the alignment. Aside from Aiyuk and Samuel, the receiver’s depth chart is quite malleable. Sherfield appears to be a lock, given his special team abilities and a few lightning bolts to the receiver in the camp.
George kittle
Ross Dwelley
Charlie woerner
The 49ers can opt for a fourth tight end, where Jordan Matthews and MyCole Pruitt, now tight ends, both fit in. Pruitt suffers from a calf injury, however, and hasn’t been on the pitch since camp started, and Matthews has never played the position until this offseason. Joshua Perkins is also on the roster after joining the club early in camp following release from UDFA Josh Pederson.
Trent williams
Laken Tomlinson
Alex mack
Aaron Banks
Mike McGlinchey
Daniel Brunskill
Jaylon moore
Colton McKivitz
Shon coleman
No change here from our last screening. Tom Compton is in the mix at right guard and could clinch a berth in the roster ahead of Coleman, who hasn’t played since a late-season injury in the 2019 preseason opener. has also pulled out of the 2020 campaign. An interesting note from reporters at camp is that Moore played tackle, which he played in college. He was expected to kick the inside out for the 49ers, but the Athletic’s Matt Barrows wrote that the fifth-round pick fulfills his original position well.
Nick bosa
Dee Ford
Samson Ebukam
Javon kinlaw
Arik Armstead
DJ Jones
Maurice hurst
Kevin givens
Key to the Ardennes
Ford was left out of our last screening due to injury issues, but he’s at camp working at a full workload. Having him on the roster greatly improves their defensive depth. Key also has a good camp and could squeeze in as an extra help on the edge. Defensive tackle Zach Kerr is still in the race for a spot on the roster as the dust settles on the roster battles.
Fred warner
Dr Greenlaw
Azeez Al Shaair
Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles
Marcell harris
An injury to Al-Shaair briefly compromised his status for the start of the season, but he’s on track to be ready for Shanahan’s opener. Harris is the new name here. He’s been playing it safe since the 49ers took him to the sixth round of the 2018 draft, but he lines up exclusively with the camp linebacker. Positional versatility and the ability of special teams is a good way to carve out a place for yourself on the list.
Jason verrett
Emmanuel Mosley
K’Waun Williams
Ambry Thomas
Deomodore Lenoir
Dontae Johnson
They are a difficult group to understand because no one behind Verrett, Moseley and Williams has established themselves as a must-have on the list. Johnson is one of their more experienced corners and he assists in special teams. The quality of the 49ers’ secondary depth will depend entirely on the development of the rookies.
Jimmie ward
Jaquiski Tartt
The story of Hufanga
Tavon Wilson
Tony jefferson
Tarvarius Moore’s Achilles injury dented the 49ers’ safety depth, but Wilson raced with the starting unit for most of the camp and Tartt resigned a one-year contract after maintaining the safety post starting in the past four years. . They can decide to keep only four, but five works for now.
Robbie gould
Mitch wishnowsky
Taybor pepper
No change here.
