The 24-year-old man accused of killing the reputed boss of the Gambino family in New York knew he was a man of note.

At a bail hearing Thursday, Staten Island prosecutors said that shortly after the shooting, Anthony Comello had sent an SMS stating "I'm on the run" and "My family is tagged".

Comello pleaded not guilty to the murder and possession of arms with charges in the death of Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali. Authorities said the March 13 th murder may be related to a romance, not a mob event.

Nevertheless, Mafia experts say that Comello is almost certainly sentenced to death in the mafia code.

The Daily News reports that Comello's lawyer asked Thursday that he be released on bail of $ 1 million, but the judge denied the claim.
