Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a tweet that DC Fire was dealing with minor injuries. She did not specify how many people were injured.

A WJLA reporter, affiliated with CNN, heard three or four loud bursts of sound that he thought were gunshots.

"You just heard people scream and they just started booking," said Tom Roussey. He said with every pop more panicked people. "They are knocking down barricades … It was only chaos for a few moments."

The Capital Alliance Pride, which hosted the event, said on its website that it was expecting more than 200 organizations to participate in the 1.5-mile parade. The parade included tanks and vehicles, the organizers said.

After the chaos, Capital Pride tweeted that the parade was over but that a neighborhood party would unfold as planned.

The incident occurred near Dupont Circle.

CNN asks the police to comment.
