Pezzola is not the first accused in the Capitol uprising to cite Trump’s calls as motivation to march and rape the Capitol. But he is among those facing the gravest accusations, along with several other members of the Proud Boys, in connection with January 6.
His record is also more clearly aimed at Trump than many of the other rioters who have mentioned Trump.
“Many of those who have answered his call will spend substantial portions if not the rest of their lives in prison,” Pezzola’s lawyer wrote. “Meanwhile, Donald Trump is resuming his life of luxury and privilege.”
Prosecutors sought Pezzola’s detention, highlighting his destruction of a Capitol window with a police riot shield, which was captured in riot footage. They say Pezzola was among the first insurgents to breach Capitol Hill and accused him of conspiring and coordinating his actions with others.
Given the combination of the accused’s actions that day, his stated intentions to commit further violence, and his access to the means to perpetrate that violence in a largely undetectable manner, there is simply no conditions or combinations of release conditions that can ensure the safety of the community if the defendant is released, ”prosecutors wrote in court last month.
Pezzola’s criticism of Trump dovetails with the case House impeachment officials plan to present on Wednesday during the opening pleadings of his Senate trial for incitement to insurgency. Leaders say Trump was the “singular” cause of the riots and that his supporters were responding to his calls when they stormed the Capitol.
