Some members of the Proud Boys, who were staunch allies of former President Donald Trump, walked away from him after leaving the White House for good on Wednesday, The New York Times reported.
“Trump will be seen as a total failure,” the Proud Boys told a Telegram channel on Monday.
The group had stayed behind the president for years and had been particularly invigorated after saying “Proud Boys – step back and stay away” in a presidential debate last year.
Trump was responding after being asked to denounce white nationalist organizations.
Some Proud Boys were in attendance on Jan.6 when a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol. After Trump lost the election in November, the group encouraged its members to attend the protests and baselessly echoed its claims that he lost due to fraud.
“Hail Emperor Trump,” the Proud Boys wrote on a private Telegram channel on Nov. 8, The Times reported.

However, when Trump stepped down, some Proud Boys were disappointed that they did not fight more to stay in power and subsequently condemned the violence that followed the siege on Capitol Hill, which left five dead.
Some members called Trump “shill” and “extraordinarily weak” and have since urged others not to attend Trump’s events or even those of the Republican Party, the Times reported.
Members are angry that Trump did not help the Proud Boys arrested for their involvement in the Jan.6 siege.
Joseph Biggs, a leader of the group, was arrested on Wednesday for obstructing proceedings, entering restricted grounds and disorderly conduct, CNN reported.

He is at least the fifth member of the Proud Boys to be arrested in connection with the deadly Capitol Riot, the Times reported.
According to Insider’s Rachel Greenspan reports, members of the far-right group QAnon have also started to disown the president. The group has flaunted a baseless conspiracy theory that Trump was fighting a “deep state” cabal of pedophiles and human traffickers.
