If you’ve got the guts to beat the scalpers and bots, you can order a retro PlayStation 5 inspired by the PlayStation 2 starting at 3 p.m. EST on Friday, January 8.
Produced in the US, the SUP3R5 console will be limited to 304 units – a number itself inspired by the original PS2 release date of 4/3/00. The starting price is $ 649. SUP3R5 also sells DualSense controllers separately for $ 99 each, and they’ll be limited to 500 units. Both products will begin shipping in late spring of this year.
A disclaimer regarding the DualSense advises potential buyers that its “retro-inspired conversion process requires complete disassembly” of the device. This means that there will be no guarantees, so if your controller fails you will run out of $ 99 and nothing to replace it. The good news is that the console itself will not be taken apart – only its side panels will be removed during the makeover, which does not void the warranty.
“The SUP3R5 team carefully applies the retro-inspired design to each handmade unit, a tedious process that is carried out with the utmost attention to detail and quality,” one official description reads. “The whole process is carried out with gloves and with the necessary safety precautions, leaving your console, controller and accessories untouched by human hands.
Considering that a significant proportion of the PlayStation community still haven’t secured the standard white PS5 that was officially released last November, being able to order this one seems like a pipe dream. But it’s worth a try, I guess.
