PS5 and Xbox shortages will continue until 2022

Chances are, if you read these words on this website, you already know how difficult it can be to get your hands on new consoles. Well, Ihave bad news straight from Phil Spencer, Vice President of Xbox Gaming: Finding a console won’t be easier anytime soon.

As spotted and transcribed by VGC, Phil Spencer spoke to The envelope recently and explained that while chip shortages were partly to blame for the ongoing console shortages, the situation was more serious.

“I think it’s probably too isolated to just talk about it as a chip issue,” Spencer said. “When I think about what it means to get the parts to build a console today and then get it to markets where the demand is, there are several types of pinch points in this process. And I regret that this is going to be with us for months and months, certainly until the end of this calendar year and until the following calendar year.

Spencer says he and everyone at Mircosoft are working hard to get consoles out and into people’s homes, but he expects that to continue to be a challenge for “quite a while.”

“What’s most disappointing is just the disappointment of the fans,” admitted Spencer. “People really want this new generation of consoles – they’re good consoles, both from us and other platform owners – and they want the new functionality. “

Almost a year after the launch of the next-gen consoles, Phil Spencer’s comments are just the latest proof that things aren’t getting better anytime soon.
