A PS5 controller charging issue is confusing gamers who are lucky enough to own the console, as certain scenarios prevent the DualSense from charging.
A PS5 A controller charging issue was encountered by several users lucky enough to own the new console, and it confuses them as there doesn’t seem to be an obvious reason why the DualSense won’t charge. Sony’s current-generation console has been available to consumers since November 12, 2020, and many first impressions took note of the impressive technology on display by the device – including the DualSense, which gets a free showcase under the made of Astro Games Room, demonstrating why its improved haptics could mean a world of difference for gamers in the future.
The PS5’s launch period has not been without its problems, however, and some have been downright alarming. Among the early PS5 issues were those who saw the console “brick” or were forced to a factory reset due to a strange rest mode issue that appeared to be related to Spider-Man: Miles Morales. This issue also appears to be related to the PS5 rest mode setting which plays a crucial role in replicating the issue that has seen some users brick their otherwise new device. Less important concerns, such as the PS5’s download speeds, were also raised, although they were certainly less urgent than any hardware or software glitches that made the console unusable.

Now, there seems to be another issue: a PS5 controller charging issue which, while inconsistent across units, affected enough users to start generating discussions on social media sites such as Twitter on how to fix it. Fans aren’t sure exactly why the DualSense isn’t charging, but they’re sure there is an issue with the PS5 controller charging that stems from putting the console into rest mode and attempting to use its port. However, there appears to be a fix – a number of PS5 owners have noted that plugging controllers into the console through the rear USB port will work around the issue, even in idle mode. However, this may not be a consistent solution, as some owners have suggested that even the rear port does not solve the problem. Sony has yet to officially comment on the issues.
Hey @AskPlayStation my controller does not charge when connected to my PS5 in idle mode. It starts to charge and then stops after about a minute. Charging in rest mode is enabled … I even changed it from 3 hours to “always” to test it.

As of yet, there don’t appear to be any issues that can’t be resolved by turning on the console and charging the controller this way – but it’s certainly not practical, and charging in rest mode is the preferred method. many users, as it allows them to go back to a fully charged controller that can ditch the cord and provide maximum comfort during their gaming session. A problem with charging the PS5 controller – especially an issue that doesn’t seem to explain why the DualSense doesn’t charge without outside help – could be another annoyance for first-time Sony console users.
The PlayStation 5’s launch period has been tough, but not the one it can’t recover from. Quality control issues are one thing, but a lot of PS5 issues seem to stem from how the rest mode setting currently works with other factors. If this can be fixed in a software update, it shouldn’t be anything other than a retarder on the exit – but if it doesn’t, the PS5 controller loading issue could turn into something that pulls away fans of the current generation console from Sony. Why the DualSense won’t charge continues to confuse gamers for now, but hopefully Sony has an answer soon.
