Why your DualSense PS5 controller won’t charge in idle mode? How to keep your PS5 controller charged? In some cases, your PlayStation 5 may not charge your DualSense controller properly in idle mode. As part of our PS5 Guide, we’ll walk you through what happens in these cases and show you other ways to charge your controller.

PS5 controller does not charge in idle mode

While this doesn’t affect everyone, there are a number of PS5 owners who find it difficult to charge their DualSense controllers while using the console in rest mode. The issue seems to only be with the front (larger) USB Type-A port on the PS5. If you plug your PS5 controller with the included USB cable into the front USB Type-A port, you may find that it does not charge your controller in idle mode. You will know if you are having this problem because the light bar on the controller will not be amber.

There are a few things you can try to make sure your DualSense PS5 controller is charging properly. The first step is to check the power saving settings of your PS5. Go to Settings> System> Power saving, then go to Features available in idle mode. Go to Power USB Ports and make sure “Always” or “3 hours” is selected.

If your PS5 controller still won’t charge via the front USB port in idle mode, try using one of the rear USB ports on the console, located on the back of the device next to the other sockets. Based on our own testing, this fixes the problem.

PlayStation itself acknowledged the problem on its website and made other suggestions:

  • Try using a different USB Type-A to Type-C cable. You will need to make sure that it is capable of “load and sync” or “load and data” rather than just load.
  • Try a USB Type-C to Type-C cable. Using a cable like this, you plug your controller into your PS5 via the small USB port on the front of the console.
  • Try to use a standalone charger that conforms to the USB standard.

You can also buy an official DualSense charging station. This accessory allows you to store and charge up to two PS5 controllers and does not require you to connect it to the PS5 itself.
