Sony will not participate in E3 2019 next week, but the PlayStation company still has news to share, especially on its much-awaited next-generation console. Sony's Jim Ryan, who recently joined SIE's president, spoke with GameSpot's sister site, CNET, to discuss some of Sony's high-profile plans for its upcoming console, supposedly the PlayStation. 5.
One of the main topics of discussion was what Ryan called "intergenerational play". This means that those who buy a PlayStation 5 (or the name of it) will be able to continue playing their PlayStation 4 games on the new box. In addition, Ryan suggested that the PlayStation Friends List encompasses both systems.
"Whether it's upstream compatibility or intergenerational playability, we can move this community to the next generation," he said. "It will not be a binary choice to know if you have to be on PlayStation 4 or next-gen to continue your friendship."
This is a big problem because the PS4 does not currently offer backward compatibility as does the rival Xbox One. In a previous interview, Ryan stated that upstream compatibility and intergenerational play are "extremely important" to make the transition as seamless as possible between systems.
Also in the interview, Ryan confirmed that the new SSD SSD from the PS5, custom-made for the system, would be part of the standard edition and not a premium version more expensive. SSD allows the PS5 to improve charging times; you can see a demonstration of faster loading times here.
Ryan also explained how the PS5 could support 4K images at 120Hz for compatible TVs. 120Hz is a refresh rate twice that of standard TVs.
Regarding why Sony is talking about the PS5 (Mark Cerny shared many details earlier) before announcing the console, Ryan said it was an effort to get ahead of the leaks. The PS5 development kits are currently being sent to outside studios and Ryan has said he wants PlayStation fans to have "clear and unequivocal" details about the system rather than "confused nonsense".
Looks like the PS5 is still long, as Ryan said, "This is just the beginning of the unveiling process." There is no word yet as to when Sony can officially announce the PS5.
As part of the meeting on Sony's business strategy, Sony has announced that the PS5 will offer "far superior" experiences to what is possible on PS4 and PS4 Pro. Sony said that people could expect "completely transformative and immersive gaming experiences" on the PS5.
You can visit CNET to read the full interview in which Ryan discusses the evolution of the video game industry, the partnership between Sony and Microsoft for cloud gaming, if the PS5 will be the last Sony console and many other things.
The PlayStation 5 will have an "attractive" price given its specifications, according to Cerny, but there is still no rough estimate of what the price could be. As for the release date of the PlayStation 5, Sony has announced that it will not be in the next fiscal year, which means it will not launch April 2020 at the earliest.
