PS5 photo scams force eBay to issue stern warning

History is full of examples of people ready to take advantage of their follow-ups if the opportunity arises, even in times of crisis and misfortune. Hot new product launches are easily one of those opportunities and the new PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles | S are no exception, with impatient and desperate buyers becoming easy prey for scalpers and con artists. A weird scam is even trying to trick people into buying what turns out to be just photos or the PS5 on eBay. Unfortunately, the low price seems to have been successful in deceiving a few interested bidders.

This is one of those cases where you won’t notice anything wrong if you don’t read carefully. These eBay listings say it’s just photos or pictures, or boxes only, as if four-digit price tags weren’t enough. Others are offering incredible prices for what some confuse with the actual console, leading some to bid on the item.

Regardless of the warning or the nonsense, these are clearly scams designed to cheat people out of their hard earned money. They are also, of course, in violation of eBay policies. In light of the growing number of such ads, the e-commerce site has issued a statement condemning “opportunistic sellers” and is working to remove these items from the site.

Unfortunately, these scams are popping up faster than eBay can possibly remove. There are also a few ads that attempt to sell raffle tickets to win a PS5 or even a cardboard box.

These scams, however, are just the tip of the PS5 and Xbox Series X supply issues | S. The Scalpers have held stocks of new consoles for ransom, swiftly driving them out of retailers before buyers can even get their hands on them. This problem is not new, of course, and the industry absolutely needs to step up its game to keep such a practice at bay.
