The Xbox One seemed to be doomed from the moment it was announced by Microsoft.
A disaster after another sealed the fate of the Xbox One even before it had a chance to get going, still controversial about DRM's current decision-making to consolidate the console with an expensive Kinect accessory that nobody wanted.
But if it's too late for the Xbox One to pose a serious challenge to the PS4, Microsoft has laid the foundation for a much more successful successor of the next generation.
As Microsoft moves in the right direction, here's why the Xbox Two could surpass the PS5 in the war of next-generation consoles.
An exclusive boat …
One of the main reasons Microsoft has fought against Sony is the lack of valuable exclusives. Aside from Forza Horizon, there are not many Xbox One games that would make a PlayStation 4 owner jealous.
Fortunately, this seems about to change, after Microsoft announced the acquisition of several studios in 2018. This includes Ninja Theory, Hellblade developer, inXile and Obsidian RPG specialists, as well as Playground games, Undead Labs and Compulsion.
This should result in a more diversified portfolio of exclusive games, not just the occasional release of Gears of War and Halo.
Games on demand …
The Xbox Game Pass has been one of Microsoft's best ideas in recent years, giving subscribers access to a ton of all-new classic and exclusive Xbox One and Xbox 360 games for a low monthly fee.
With the purchase of many studios by Microsoft and the release of more exclusive than ever, the Game Pass will become an increasingly attractive proposition for owners of Xbox.
If so, you can expect Microsoft to go even further with streaming games and multiple levels of membership for even more choice.
The most powerful console …
Although it was too little and too late for Microsoft, the Xbox One X is a success since its launch late last year. The most powerful console on the market, the Xbox One X has encouraged multi-console owners to think twice about the platform on which to buy their new versions.
In other words, if you want the best version of a new version of blockbuster, there is a good chance that you want to play Xbox One X.
If Microsoft publishes a next generation juggernaut that eclipses the PS5, Sony could then have serious problems.
Multiplatform …
If there is one thing that Fortnite has shown us, it is that there is a real appetite for cross-platform play and compatibility. I want to be able to connect to my Fortnite Switch account when I take my lunch break, and then upload the same profile to the Xbox One or PS4 when I get home.
Likewise, I want to be able to play multiplayer games with and against my friends, regardless of their platform.
Although Sony reluctantly introduced the cross-platform game for some titles, Microsoft really adhered to the idea, which puts them in value for the next generation.
Backward compatibility …
One of the main advantages of the Xbox One over the PS4 is its compatibility with earlier versions, not only with Xbox 360 games, but also with the original versions of the Xbox.
There are rumors that Sony may also consider backward compatibility with the PS5, but the Xbox Two is almost certain to have this feature immediately.
