The PlayStation 5 could soon be even shorter after a large shipping container lodged in the Suez Canal, causing disruption to shipping routes that cross the popular waterway.
The freighter “Ever Given” was finally released on Monday after being stuck in the Suez Canal for nearly a week. The heavily trafficked waterway is located 120 km east of Cairo and facilitates much of the direct navigation between Europe and Asia. the BBC reports that goods worth an estimated US $ 9.6 billion were stranded every day due to the blockage.
Before the fiasco, a global shortage of computer chips led to price hikes and delays in the supply of electronic products such as mobile phones, cars and game consoles. In February, Sony blamed the chip shortage for the limited supply of its new game console, which launched in November to strong demand.
Wired reported in February that buying the game console was so difficult that many users resorted to internet bots and resellers to purchase one. The next-gen console can be purchased from select retailers for $ 399 for the digital edition or $ 499 for the Ultra-HD Blu-Ray disc player, although they often go out of stock.
According to Business Insider, the scarcity of PS5 consoles may be compounded by the disruption to the global supply chain caused by the stranded ship. It is not known whether Ever Given was carrying any merchandise or PS5 parts, although it is likely that shipments from Asia will experience temporary delays.
Earlier this month, Sony unveiled its next-generation VR controller for the PS5, with prototypes of the new controller coming soon to the development community.
