Christmas has come and gone, but the latest gaming consoles and high-end gaming GPUs are still out of stock at retailers and selling for hefty premiums on eBay.
While aftermarket prices for Sony (SNE) – Get the report PlayStation 5 and Microsoft (MSFT) – Get the report The Xbox Series X has fallen from highs reached after the consoles went on sale in November, they are still well above list prices.
The standard PS5, which has an MSRP of $ 499, still sells for over $ 800 on eBay (EBAY) – Get the report, for example. And the PS5 Digital Edition, which doesn’t have an optical drive and has an MSRP of $ 399, tends to cost around $ 700.
The Xbox Series X sells for around $ 700 on eBay. That’s a decent premium over the console’s $ 499 MSRP, although less than one than what’s ordered by the PS5, which of all indications has seen (with help from an arguably superior listing of exclusive launch titles) greater player interest.
Meanwhile, the Xbox Series S, which doesn’t have an optical drive and has a less powerful GPU than the X Series, typically sells for between $ 350 and $ 400. This is a moderate premium over the Series S MSRP of $ 299.
Nvidia (NVDA) – Get the report RTX 30 series gaming GPUs also remain relevant after their September and October launches. The high-end GeForce RTX 3090 often changes hands for around $ 2,000, well above its MSRP of $ 1,499, as you can see below.
The RTX 3080, which has an MSRP of $ 699, typically sells for between $ 1,200 and $ 1,300. And although Nvidia delayed its launch for two weeks in October in an attempt to avoid serious shortages, the RTX 3070 still sells for between $ 750 and $ 800 today, well above its MSRP of $ 499.
The story is similar for AMD (AMD) – Get the report RX 6000 gaming GPU lineup, launched in November and early December. The flagship Radeon RX 6900 XT typically sells for between $ 350 and $ 400 above its MSRP of $ 999; the RX 6800 XT sells for $ 400 to $ 500 above its MSRP of $ 649; and the standard RX 6800 sells for $ 200 to $ 300 above its MSRP of $ 579.
While such shortages and aftermarket premiums for high-end gaming hardware are unlikely to last through the whole of 2021, it looks like they will stay in place at the start of the year as chip and chip vendors material deal with both supply. the constraints of the chain and the huge demand from consumers spending more time at home than ever before due to COVID.
Sony and Microsoft have both warned that they expect shortages of their latest consoles to persist into early 2021. In November, Xbox CFO Tim Stuart predicted that the shortages of Xbox Series X and S would last until Microsoft’s June 2021 quarter.
Likewise, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang predicted in October that shortages of RTX 3080/3090 graphics cards would last until 2021. And by the end of November, AMD reportedly predicted that it would take 4 to 8 weeks for that. RX 6800 series graphics card prices are dropping. at their MSRP.
Of course, given what the supply-demand balance looks like for the most powerful gaming GPUs from AMD and Nvidia, gamers in the RX 6800 series card market probably shouldn’t hold their breath. pending a quick return to MSRP.
