White House press secretary Jen Psaki was grilled about President Biden joke in response to a question about the crisis in Afghanistan on Wednesday.

A reporter asked Biden what he would do if the Americans stayed in Afghanistan past the August 31 deadline, which prompted the president to joke, “You’ll be the first person I call.”

Fox News’s Peter Doocy pressured Psaki over Biden reply to the journalist’s question, asking him: “What’s so funny?”

Psaki appeared to be taken aback by the question, focusing her response on the administration’s talking points regarding the ongoing evacuation.

“I think what he said was he didn’t – well, what can I say from here, I should say that like he said yesterday and like the secretary of state just said, we are on the right track to complete our mission on August 31, “Psaki replied.

“Obviously there are discussions, and the president received a briefing this morning – as I noted, he asked for contingency plans yesterday and he received a briefing about them this morning,” Psaki continued. “These are incredibly serious issues and these are internal discussions.”

Psaki said that in addition to “contingency plans” requested by Biden, the withdrawal plan is “contingent on achieving our goals and continuing coordination with the Taliban.”

The president’s spokeswoman also said Biden had spoken out on the issue “several times over the past few days” and “also pointed out” that the administration is monitoring “ISISK threats.”
