PSG score vs Barcelona: Barça’s return effort stops on missed Messi PK; PSG quarterback in the Champions League

Despite having enough chances to make their Champions League game interesting, Barcelona were unable to pull off the comeback against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday in the second leg. Barca took advantage of many scoring opportunities in Paris and settled for a 1-1 draw. PSG qualified for the quarter-finals, 5-2, in total.

A 4-1 home loss in the first leg was far too difficult for Lionel Messi’s side to overcome, although Barca gave them an admirable run. They created 21 shots, 14 more than PSG, while owning the ball more than 70% of the time.

Barcelona looked stellar in the opening 45 minutes and should have scored several goals, but a lack of precision and a stopped penalty kick saw the visitors scoring just one, needing three more in the second half .

A 30th-minute goal from a Kylian Mbappe penalty, following Clement Lenglet’s unfortunate foul on Mauro Icardi, didn’t change much as Barca still needed four goals to stand a chance. Messi scored his goal in the 37th minute but couldn’t capitalize on the penalty before the end of the first half, forcing them to have three in the second half – they would not have had one.

PSG were without Neymar, who missed out with injury, but they didn’t need him, focusing on defense above all else to secure their place in the bottom eight.

The French side are now in the quarter-finals alongside Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and Porto.
