‘Psychonauts 2’ shows the power of Xbox Series X

A group of game journalists and influencers recently spent some time previewing Psychonauts 2, and the game sounds pretty good. it looks a lot like the first Psychonauts game, which is exactly what most fans expect from Double Fine.

For Xbox gamers in particular, Psychonauts 2 will be a great August treat. There are two reasons for this, although it depends on your Xbox setup.

First off, this is one of the new 2021 releases that will head to Xbox Game Pass at launch. There are quite a few, actually. And while Psychonauts 2 is not an Xbox exclusive, being able to play it as part of your Game Pass membership is a nice bonus.

Xbox Series X gamers also have a nice advantage over other platforms. Well Played’s game preview includes its performance specs across different platforms and the Xbox Series X comes out on top:

As you can see, the only way to play this game at 120 fps is on Xbox Series X or S. The only way to play it at 4k resolution is on Xbox Series X. The PS5 can do 1440p at 6o frames. per second but cannot reach the 4k mark. At 1440p, the Xbox Series X can play at 120 fps.

UPDATE: Readers have pointed out that the reason the PS5 cannot achieve 4k and 60fps is that there is no native PS5 version of the game, only a PS4 version that can be played on PS5. Hence exactly the same performance as the PS4 Pro. This is something I was aware of but forgot to mention originally. My excuses. /End of update.

It may not make much of a difference to you or your enjoyment of the game. It may be an imperceptible difference for a title like this. Here again, perhaps the difference will be dramatic. At least Xbox Series X | S gamers will be able to decide whether to prioritize images or resolution.
