PUBG Lite stops at the end of April

There are different versions of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds – the game that popularized the Battle Royale genre and inspired a legion of competitors – which you can play on everything from your malnourished phone to your high-end gaming rig. At the end of April, however, the list will be of a shorter entry: PUBG Lite, the free version of the ultimate fight to the life and death for low-end machines, will drop on April 29. New downloads ceased on March 30.

In his note to fans, Krafton, the game’s publisher, did not give a reason for the impending shutdown. Here’s what he said in full:

We are deeply grateful for the passion and support of the incredible number of PUBG LITE fans who have been with us. During the difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic, we hope that PUBG LITE has been able to provide our fans with a fun way to stay safe.

Sadly, after much deliberation, we made the difficult decision to shut down the service and now is the time for our trip to come to an end. We regret to inform you that the PUBG LITE service is scheduled to end on April 29, 2021 (UTC).

The news of the shutdown came after the publisher announced last November that PUBG Lite became completely free, after dropping its in-game currency system. The game launched in beta in January 2019 in Thailand and moved to Europe in October of the same year. Good night, sweet prince. Good night, sweet ultimate fight for life and death.
