Los Angeles residents may have gotten through the Thanksgiving vacation during the Covid-19 pandemic, but Los Angeles director of public health Dr. Barbara Ferrer said on Saturday the county was far from clear.

During a press briefing, Ferrer confirmed a total of 3,143 new cases of Covid-19 and 19 deaths and 1,951 hospitalizations. The latest coronavirus case tally may be lower than in previous weeks, as a number of county-wide testing centers were closed for the Thanksgiving holiday. Ferrer said Angelenos can expect the number of cases to increase as testing facilities reopen in the coming week.

The latest statistics come a day after Los Angeles officials adopted another, safer home order on Friday. From Monday, November 30 through December 20, residents of Los Angeles should stay in their homes as much as possible, limiting their exposure to people outside their immediate homes when possible.

“If we really care about each other and care about these essential workers who take risks every day … we shouldn’t get together with anyone outside of our immediate home, at least for the immediate future,” he said. advised Ferrer.

Ferrer also announced that various companies must adhere to limited maximum customer capacity policies for the coming weeks. Non-essential services can only open at 20% of maximum capacity and essential retail stores at 35% of maximum capacity, making this holiday shopping season a challenge for customers and employees.

While Angelenos may be tempted to hit the malls and celebrate the various winter holidays ahead, it could endanger many vulnerable family members. She added that failure to follow official orders, masks and social distancing orders could lead to tragic results.

“The dead don’t get a second chance,” she said.

To date, Los Angeles County has identified a total of 390,891 Covid-19 cases and 7,623 coronavirus-related deaths.
