Publix recalls products containing squash following recent listeria problems

Publix has launched a voluntary recall of certain products containing butternut squash after the vegetable was recently linked to multiple recalls due to listeria issues.

The recall covers certain store-prepared Publix Steam In Bag products containing a specific ingredient in butternut squash, according to the latest Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory.

The company was asked to issue the recall after its supplier, Pero Family Farms Company, LLC, raised concerns about the vegetable earlier this month. Pero Family Farms had recalled its butternut squash platters, which the company said could be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

“As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially affected products have been removed from all store shelves,” said Maria Brous, Director of Communications at Publix.

To date, Publix has not been notified of any illnesses related to the recalled product.

Just this week, the FDA also alerted customers to the recall of another variety of butternut squash products for similar reasons.

In a recall notice issued Tuesday, Lancaster Foods, LLC., Announced the recall of several of its processed butternut squash products produced in a dozen states.

The body can cause serious and even fatal infections in young children, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA.

Healthy individuals are likely to suffer only from “short-term symptoms” of a listeria infection, including fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, the FDA said.

However, it can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
