The 2021 NBA Draft is almost here. While the Detroit Pistons have not given any public indication of where they plan to go, analysts are pretty clear who the team will select.
On Tuesday afternoon, Pistons general manager Troy Weaver cautioned against believing everything that has been posted. But the Pistons are in a solid position with the overall first pick.
In Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham, the Pistons would get a player who could come in and contribute right away. There have been numerous scout reports that speak of Cunningham’s versatility in attack, as well as his ability to wreak havoc on defense.

Jonathan Wasserman said everything points to the Pistons taking the alleged No.1 pick in this year’s draft despite the organization’s refusal to comment publicly. He added that Cunningham would slide into Detroit’s rotation as a combo guard alongside Hayes.

Jeremy Woo mentioned that “a strong trading market didn’t seem to materialize” and that No.1 Cunningham is the easier choice for the Pistons. He wrote that Cunningham is seen as a safe option with a “versatile skill set tailored to enhance a modern attack, even if he’s not a full-time leader for the long haul.”
On top of that, Woo called Cuningham’s solid play from several places on the floor out of the ordinary for prospects of the same age. He added that it would make it much easier to add talent in future projects.

Jonathan Givony wrote that Cunningham’s position in Detroit has grown stronger and it would be surprising if the Pistons didn’t take him with the first pick. Givony indicated that “Detroit’s commitment to Cunningham may be imminent”, although the front office has indicated otherwise.
