When I arrived at CitiField today, various members of the media asked me if I still thought the Mets were a playoff team in 2019 and my answer was that I would never go back on a prediction because this one is so cruel. I would be the first to admit that things have not gone well for this team, but putting this season in the trash is not the answer.
As most of you know, I have been trying to develop a better relationship with Mickey Callaway this season and, to his credit, he has been very open to that. So after his bail, I gave him advice. And to be honest in a short time that I know Mickey, I learned a lot about him in terms of honesty in communication.
He is the right man for this job and the way out of the crisis creates an opportunity. Of course, this team needs to play better but that moment will come. I think that this alignment has the necessary elements to do it and that the pitchage of departure will improve as the season progresses, the defense on the ground being the biggest problem that I see at the 39, present time.
The rumors we hear in this city about the situation in Cano are really not productive to be conducted in public. Mickey has approached the problem with Cano but understand this. Baseball is a grueling season of 162 games and I can assure you that the conservation of energy is essential to ensure that players are healthy when the games matter the most. That being said, there are times when you MUST hurry and run, and not doing it twice in the space of 3 years is not a very good optic.
But make your public outcry just so the media can see your anger is a total waste of time. It must be a face-to-face conversation and not a public display. Mickey knows it. I know it. Why the rest of the media does not understand that this remains a mystery to me.
I have a lot of respect for Robinson Cano as a player and a person. He understands that what he did was unacceptable, but he does not need to ask for forgiveness for his hands and knees. Life is never made of mistakes. It's about responding to those mistakes and knowing that Cano will respond in a positive way. Regarding Callaway, Brodie and the Wilpons made the right decision today: show their support to let everyone know that all is not lost.
I know that backing up the Met's organization is not a popular way for a media member to behave because in this city, you're kicking a dog when there's is shot. But anyone who knows me understands that I will never be a Met Met reporter who follows the herd – I have my own views and I have no problem owning them because that 's the way it is. who am I?
It was Brodie's first real hard time and he treated it with grace, class and honesty. And every big season for a team has moments like this in which your resilience is tested. You return to these moments to examine how a group of players reacts to them.
I told you at the spring training that I thought it was a special group and I still believe it. Supporting a team when the rest of the media will want to get noticed will not make me very popular in the press, but we do not care. That's what I'm doing here – whether you like it or not, it's your choice. But this club reminds me so much of the 2015 team in the way it gives honest reviews and has a group of players who absolutely love the manager.
I know the so-called experts wanted a change of direction, but not me. They need to tweak things and play better by looking in the mirror and making sure there is concentration and commitment. But capsizing the leaders would have been the wrong solution. And I thanked Brodie Van Wagenen for not choosing the simplest solution to appease these experts.
The situation will improve for fans of Met and the maintenance of the same cast was the right way to start the recovery of this season 2019.
