Puzzle Quest returns after ten years of absence. Puzzle Quest 3 will once again combine match-3 and RPG mechanics with original designer Steve Fawkner at the helm, but this time it will be – uh-oh – free-to-play possible.
Not much based on this trailer, or in the press release, which loosely promises “a twist of traditional puzzle gameplay” and “an intense 1v1 combat system achieved in a 3D game world.”
Match-3 has a bad reputation, but there is nothing more satisfying in games than matching a bunch of gems of the same color. In Puzzle Quest, different types of matches gave your hero different resources that he could then spend on attacks against various fantastic monsters. There was a pattern quickly identified in your pattern match, but it was more complex in the extreme.
I would unequivocally be delighted with the announcement of Puzzle Quest 3, if it wasn’t free. There are a lot of great examples of F2P games in our time, but I haven’t seen a model for match-3 games that don’t detract from the gaming experience. I play match-games. 3 to relax, but it’s hard to relax when there are limited lives or a dwindling energy resource that will end my gaming session or require me to spit out coins to continue.
John wrote a Puzzle Quest 2 review for us in 2010, finding himself compelled to keep playing despite being repetitive.
It’s ridiculous that after playing it for days, just repeating these same actions over and over again, I know that as soon as I finish writing this I’ll come back and play some more. I am sure that what he is proposing cannot justify my interest in playing it. But I won’t stop. I don’t want to stop. I want to repeat this action. And repeat this action. And repeat this action. And I’m hardly interested in whether the context is changing.
Puzzle Quest 2 does not appear to be available for purchase on PC, having been removed from Steam by its publisher, but the original Puzzle Quest is still available. Puzzle Quest 3 has an official website where you can sign up for updates.
