A week from today, the quarterback battle in Denver begins in earnest when the Broncos show up for training camp on July 27.
At this point, the Broncos brasses have simply laid the groundwork for the competition between Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater. Ahead of heading into summer vacation, coach Vic Fangio noted that it was far too early to make any assumptions about QBs’ situation in the race for the starting gig.
When training camp finally opens, the assessment will be flawless.
NFL Network’s James Palmer noted on Monday the NFL NOW that the Broncos think only 2-3% of their QB evaluations have happened. Most of the evaluation happens during training at camp and the preseason.
Don’t expect a quick decision from the Broncos brass either.
“It could, to my knowledge, go through all three preseason games before they make a decision,” Palmer added. “That’s where they’re at right now when they watch these two quarters.”
The NFL, which cut the preseason schedule to three games with the addition of a 17th regular-season fight, has raised questions about how coaches would divide these ramp-up games. A week’s break before the regular season might encourage coaches to continue using Game 3 as a dress rehearsal for beginners. Or we could see the trend of most celebs and newbies sitting all show season.
With Denver in the middle of a vital QB competition, we could see the starters in all three slopes.
The Broncos kick off their pre-season schedule against the Minnesota Vikings – Bridgewater’s first club – on Saturday, August 14 at 4 p.m. ET. They will then face the Seahawks on August 21 at 10 p.m. ET. And complete the slate against the LA Rams on August 28 at 9:05 p.m. ET.
The battle of the QB Broncos will be one of the bigger stories when training camps begin fully next week.
Fangio has been saying all spring that the plan was for flaggers to split reps 50/50 – maybe not half and half every day, but when overall reps are analyzed, the plan is for everyone to have an equal chance.
