ASHBURN, Va. – The Washington Redskins quarterback, Alex Smith, finally dropped the massive brace on his right leg eight months after being fractured in horrible tibia and fibula.
Smith's wife, Elizabeth, posted a photo of him on Monday holding the external fixer in his hand. The team's Twitter account re-released this photo with the following message: "The corset is off! A big step for Alex in his recovery."

Given the severity of the injury, Smith is unlikely to play this season. Washington recruited quarterback Dwayne Haskins in the first round. Smith recently announced his intention to play again in the NFL and is under contract until 2022.
Coach Jay Gruden said last month that Smith's recovery "is going to be a pretty long process." At the time, Gruden had stated that Smith could launch but that it was still about a month before getting rid of the leg splint.
