According to a rumor from WinFuture, a new Wear OS chipset is in preparation. The so-called processor could be known as Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 429 and would be the follow-up to Snapdragon Wear 3100.

The report states that the Wear 429 would be a modified version of the standard Snapdragon 429 chipset, already used by mid-range smartphones such as the Nokia 3.2. Since the chipset is powerful enough to run a smartphone, it is a significant advance over Usury 3100, which is only an incremental upgrade over the old Snapdragon Wear 2100.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 429 could, it seems, support four Cortex-A53 cores in 64-bit computing. According to rumors, the Wear 429 is being tested with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, which is about double what many Wear OS smartwatches can handle.

Even today, most Wear OS smart watches use the Wear 2100 chipset, which debuted in 2016. Fossil Sport is one of the few Wear OS devices running on the 3100 chipset. Its performance remains poor compared to devices other than Wear OS, including the reigning apparel champion, the Apple Watch.

according to WinFuture, the Wear 429 chip will not arrive until 2020.

Too little, too late?

All this raises the question: if this Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 429 chipset is real and is in fact a major update of the dress systems, will it be too late to save Wear OS when it finally arrives? At present, most people who own or have owned a Wear OS device are likely to associate the platform with slow and buggy experiences. And those who have not used a Wear OS device would probably be reluctant to switch because they are already locked on another platform.

Like last year, rumors are circulating that Google could launch something like a Pixel watch this year. Theoretically, this could help Wear OS out of the mess it is in, but a Pixel watch would still be launched with a Wear 3100 processor if it landed this year. Unless this watch is absolutely stunning on this chip, it would only hurt Google's chances of keeping Wear OS relevant.

However, if Google (or any other company) expects this Wear 429 chipset to be ready in 2020, the time will have been so long that it could also be devastating to wear OS.

In short, there is no easy answer to this problem. It's good news that Qualcomm is working on a new processor and has not abandoned Wear OS, but the operating system is in a desperate situation and needs a solution here and now – not in 2020.

NEXT: Five years of Wear OS operation and it is still too complicated to recommend
