Qualcomm is ready to intervene if the problems reported by Apple to secure a 5G modem for the 2020 Intel iPhones 2020 or other suppliers are known, said Friday the president of the chip maker.
"We are still in San Diego, they have our phone number," said Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon Axios. "If they call, we will support them."
The executive also said that although it "does not really know what Apple is doing," the longer a company waits before launching a 5G device, the higher the bar will be, probably referring to competing phones and tablets. The first compatible Samsung model, the S10 5G, will be launched soon.
The comments follow a report that Apple is still looking for an Intel 5G modem, but that the XMM 8160 has not met several development deadlines. Apple would have established a summer break for the samples, with a finished product expected for the beginning of 2020 – around the time the new iPhones are being finalized.
Qualcomm already offers 5G modems, but Apple avoids them in the light of the global legal war that began in 2017 between the two companies. Almost all iPhones now use 4G modems made by Intel, the only exceptions being older models bypassing bans.
Apple would work on its own 5G chip under the aegis of senior vice president of Hardware Technologies, Johny Srouji. The project would have between 1,200 and 2,000 engineers, some recruited from Intel and Qualcomm, but it may be necessary to wait until 2021 to deliver a product.
