Qualcomm would work on a new 64-bit smartwatch processor

Last year, Qualcomm promised to revitalize the Wear OS smart watches with the release of its Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor. The chip was supposed to breathe new life into the clothing market, but it ended up being a fiasco thanks to its jerky performance and battery life unimpressive.

Fortunately, it seems that Qualcomm is preparing to try again. According to a report by WinFuture, the company is currently developing a new SoC for smartwatch called "Snapdragon Wear 429" or "Snapdragon Wear 2700".

Essentially a modified version of the Snapdragon 429 processor for smartphones, the new smartwatch chip would feature a 64-bit architecture, use the latest Cortex A53 processor and have 8GB of storage with 1GB of LPDDR3 RAM. For comparison purposes, the Wear 3100 only supports 32-bit design and has an older Cortex A7 processor.

There is mentioned a "Track3" component for the platform, which WinFuture said will probably be used to provide better efficiency / battery life. Other highlights include Bluetooth 5.0, support for 5.1 EMMC flash memory, and an LTE modem.

It is believed that Qualcomm is in the early stages of developing the new chip, which means it will likely be a long time before the product is marketed.

The prospect of a new processor for Wear OS that keeps its promises is rather interesting, but Google will need more than a new chipset to be able to leave Wear OS of the rut in which it is for a few years now.
