Reports started circulating last week that Detroit: become human developer, Quantic Dream, was working on an unlikely new project: a Star wars Game. While Kotaku cannot currently confirm if this is 100% accurate, we heard something similar from an independent source with knowledge of the studio’s plans.
The rumor started when YouTuber Gautoz, Going through VGC, claimed on September 16 that the French studio had made an agreement with Disney for a Star wars game following the end of its exclusive three-game publishing agreement with Sony. Yesterday, DoubleShockers published a separate report, based on a separate source, which supported Gautoz’s claim. The report said the project had been in development for about 18 months. Report author Tom Henderson also shared a screenshot on social media from Quantic Dream’s Twitter account. like an article on the report.
Kotaku heard the same from a third separate source with knowledge of the studio’s development plans. According to this individual, Quantic Dream has indeed worked on a Star wars game for about a year and a half, but it won’t be the conventional type of fast-paced event-based game we’ve come to expect from the French studio. Instead, they said, the game will have more traditional action gameplay, and maybe even open-world and multiplayer elements.
Quantic Dream did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The floodgates have recently reopened for new Star wars Games. In addition to EA Star Wars: Battlefront II, Star Wars Jedi: The Fallen Order, and Star Wars: Squadrons, which were all created under his 10-year exclusive agreement with Disney, we learned earlier this year that Ubisoft is now working on his own open world Star wars project. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic get a new game in the form of a remake also. While EA’s deal remains in effect until 2023, that apparently hasn’t stopped Lucasfilm Games from making plans for future projects. Quantic Dream’s next game could be one of them.

Whatever Quantic Dream’s next game is, its new Montreal studio will apparently play a big part. Open earlier this year, Quantic Dream Montreal is part of the recent big boom in video game studios in the Canadian city and has acquired talent from neighboring companies known for their big budget action games, including Assassin’s Creed-manufacturer Ubisoft, Deus Ex-maker Eidos Montreal, and maker of the future Knights of Gotham, WB Games Montreal.
Part of the goal is to provide Quantic Dream with greater development expertise in areas outside of branching storytelling and cinematic narratives featured in games like Heavy rain, according to two former QD developers who wished to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to speak to the press on the subject.
They also said Kotaku that this has been a difficult climb, and that Quantic Dream’s proprietary game engine and developer tools are outdated and not well suited to creating more action-oriented and exploration-oriented games. Attempts to break away from the studio’s past house style have led to internal tensions, according to one of the former developers, as teams debate the priority of gameplay over game writing.
All of this comes as Quantic Dream continues to wage legal battles against some of those involved in a series of 2018 French press articles accusing the studio of have toxic working conditions. The report also detailed sexist and racist jokes, and a lot of crunch (extended periods of overtime). Quantic Dream denied the information at the time, then sued continue publications, alongside former employees of a series of court battles. These cases are not all finished yet. The studio’s libel case against Mediapart and The world was largely laid off last week, according to the STJV Video Game Workers Union. Several other appeals are still pending.
