The workshop behind Heavy rain, Beyond two souls, and Detroit: become human, Quantic Dream, goes from androids to droids. He’s developing a new Star Wars game, according to reports from DualShockers and Kotaku. According to both reports, Quantic Dream already has 18 months of development on its unannounced Star Wars project.
Quantic Dream’s Star Wars game is rumored to be different from the developer’s previous games. Kotaku, citing an anonymous source familiar with the project, reports that the game will focus less on fast-paced event-style mechanics and more on traditional action elements. We reached out to Quantic Dream for comment.
Since the release of the PlayStation 4 exclusive Detroit: become human in 2018, Paris-based Quantic Dream continued its independence, expanding into publishing and founding a new studio in Montreal. Quantic Dream Montreal is managed by Stéphane D’Astous, formerly of Eidos-Montreal and Ubisoft Montreal. Assassin’s Creed game designer Yohan Cazaus briefly served as Gameplay Director at the new Quantic Dream studio before moving to Electronic Arts’ Motive Studio.
In 2019, Chinese internet company NetEase purchased a minority stake in Quantic Dream, as part of an investment in “the development and creation of next-generation games.” NetEase said at the time that the investment “will support [Quantic Dream]the vision to become a global multi-franchise entertainment company and to develop advanced technologies and games for the future.
Last year, Quantic Dream self-released its most recent games, Heavy rain, Beyond two souls, and Detroit: become human, for Windows PC on Steam. The games were originally released by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation platforms. Quantic Dream has not announced its next project.
In January, Lucasfilm Games proclaimed a “new era” for Star Wars games. “[W]With Lucasfilm and the Galaxy entering a new phase of unprecedented creativity from afar, the world of Lucasfilm Games, developed in collaboration with the best studios in the industry, will do the same, ”the company said in a statement. Since then, Lucasfilm Games and its partners have announced a new title from Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment, a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and a free battle arena game called Star Wars: Hunters.
