Queens District Attorney Richard Brown has died, his office said Saturday. He was 86 years old.
He was in a health facility in Redding, Connecticut, surrounded by his wife, two daughters, son, and two granddaughters, including a junior at West Point.
Brown had been in the facility for several days after a fall at his home. He resigned in March after 28 years at the DA position while battling Parkinson's disease.
"Judge Brown – as he was fondly called – was a single public servant," Queens Deputy District Attorney, District Attorney General John M. Ryan said in a statement. "Judge Brown has been instrumental in making this city the safest big city in the country.
"The district attorney's office has created one of the state's first drug courts, as well as mental health courts and veterans' courts – all very successful over the years and their models. duplicated throughout the country.
When he took office in 1991, the crime rate reached record highs. Brown became the oldest attorney in the city.
The editorial board of the Post has touted Brown as "the last real prosecutor," saying, "He has something to be proud of because Queens has the highest conviction rate in the city."
