A scene from the ’60s from The Queen’s Gambit featured comics from the’ 80s, which caught the eyes and anger of many comic book fans online.
The queen’s gambit has received critical acclaim since its debut on Netflix. However, one small detail blew the minds of comic book fans – and not in a good way.
Comic book letterer Pat Brosseau posted an image from the show on Twitter when chess prodigy Elizabeth Harmon visits a drugstore. The store’s caster rack caught Brosseau’s attention, as it was full of comics that were two decades ahead of the 1963 show’s set.
He wrote: “This scene is supposed to be set in 1963 but I see Avengers, Deathstroke and Spider-man comics from the 80s and 90s in it!”

Among the comics on the rack there are issues of Peter Parker, the spectacular Spider-Man and Star brand, both published in 1976 and 1987 respectively. Fans have expressed their shock at the flub, including actor and comic book enthusiast / writer Patton Oswalt. “START A CLASS ACTION ACTION NOW,” Oswalt replied.
The queen’s gambit is based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis and stars Anna-Taylor Joy as Elizabeth Harmon. The series is also written and directed by Scott Frank, who contributed to the screenplay for Logan. Frank also created the Western drama Impious for Netflix, which focuses on outlaw Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell).
Streaming now on Netflix, Queen’s Gambit stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Isla Johnson, Bill Camp, Moses Ingram, Christiane Seidel, Rebecca Root, Chloe Pirrie, Akemnji Ndifornyn, Marielle Heller, Harry Melling, Patrick Kennedy, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Marcin Dorocinski.
