We are so busy driving our Citi Bikes to Citi Field that we sometimes forget to stop and enjoy all the iconic spaces and symbols of the city. For example, to choose something totally random, the iconic Pepsi-Cola sign that lies along the East River in Queens. However, residents of the region noticed this week that the sign had a major drawback: a temporary blue JetBlue logo was installed under the red lettering. How can a business sponsor let us down like this ?! Can you imagine if the Playstation Theater, Chrysler Building, Barclays Center, Woolworth Building or Time Warner Center did that ?!
According to the Wall Street Journal, the illuminated logo of JetBlue had been approved by the Monuments Preservation Commission this month and will be available at least until October 1 as part of a promotion announcing a partnership between PepsiCo and JetBlue (JetBlue recently changed from a Coca-Cola plane to a Pepsi plane).
Some residents of the Queens area were surprised by the change and filed complaints with Councilor Jimmy Van Bramer, representative of Long Island City. "It's a pretty big change for a pretty visible and iconic sign," he told the WSJ. "Even if it's temporary, it should not be there."
The 147-foot long panel was first installed in 1936 at the long-stuck Queens Pepsi bottling plant. The sign has been disassembled and moved along the Queens waterfront several times since the late 1990s (the current sign is actually a 1994 restoration, the 1930s sign being severely damaged by a storm) . It received the status of historical monument in 2016. This statute had been considered for 28 years. And yet, the panel Kentile Floors remains in limbo!
It's a sad day when corporate signage is getting worse with ads like this one. As a disgusted consumer wrote, "Wow classic- corporations ruin my privileged relationship with other companies".
