If the opening of Thursday night’s Big 12 was any indication, this year’s race for the league title will be as exciting as it has ever been.
Big 12 game opener between Kansas ‘No.5 and Texas Tech’s No.14 ended in final possession, featuring Kansas’ new red jersey Jalen Wilson with a decisive block on a pull-up by Terrence Shannon Jr.
It was enough for the Jayhawks to hang on for a 58-57 victory over the Red Raiders in United Supermarkets Arena on Thursday.
Kansas junior Ochai Agbaji gave the green light with 13 seconds left on a great find from Marcus Garrett. The streak came on a timed out set by KU head coach Bill Self after Texas Tech took a 1 point advantage with 34 seconds remaining.
Agbaji led KU with 23 points on 8 of 11 shots from the ground, including a 4v7 effort at long range. Garrett added 10 points to join him in double digits. Wilson, who struggled and only finished with 7 points, ended up playing the game.
Kansas have won 30 consecutive opening conference games since the 1991-92 season, and 18 of those wins are on the road.
