Quinn Nordin stays perfect inside Gillette, Mac Jones’ final appearance in issue 50 – CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) – The Patriots entered the field late Tuesday afternoon, but this time they weren’t on the training grounds. The team were back inside Gillette Stadium, with all fans invited to attend the practice session.

The players took to the pitch shortly before 4 p.m., as fans filled the bottom bowl. This will be the last time anyone sees the Patriots before they take the field Thursday for Thursday night’s preseason opener against Washington.

Here is what came out of the practice.

GOODBYE, FIFTY

Take a good look, America. Because unless there is a change in lineman or linebacker, Mac Jones will never wear the number 50 again.

Like all rookies in recent years, Jones got the ugly number slapped on the chest for training camp as the Patriots have made a habit of getting rookies to win their number. The first pick in the draft gets number 50, the second pick gets number 51, and so on.

But with a real live game on Thursday, the Patriots rookies will have all of their real numbers. Jones is expected to go with the No.10, which he wore in middle and high school, and which is not used by any of the current Patriots.

NORDIN STILL PERFECT

Kicker Quinn Nordin is trying to earn a place in the roster, and he’s certainly done his best in both practices at the stadium. NESN.com’s Zack Cox had Nordin 4-for-4 on field goals, which makes him perfect in both practice sessions held in the stadium this summer.

The action of the game will be more interesting, of course. But for now, Nordin has turned heads with his strong leg this summer.

ANDREWS ABSENT … FOR GOOD REASON

David Andrews’ hand injury wouldn’t be serious, but he was out on Tuesday nonetheless. But it was for the best of reasons. Andrews and his wife welcomed a baby into the world:

CHRISTIAN BARMORE OUT AGAIN; NELSON AGHOLOR DOES NOT TAKE PART

Rookie defensive tackle Christian Barmore was also absent as he had a foot / ankle problem.

Receiver Nelson Agholor also only participated in the stretch:

HENRY ANDERSON: THE TERMINATOR

Henry Anderson said this week that he’s thrilled to hit players from another team. He let out some of his boredom / frustration on a bad blocking sled in the end zone.

The poor girl never had any luck.

NEW PLAYER: MALIK GANT

An unidentified defensive player wearing the number 19 was on the pitch on Tuesday. ESPN’s Mike Reiss turned him into an identified player: Malik Gant.

The Patriots have freed running back Tyler Gaffney to make room for Gant.

JAKE BAILEY SHOWS

With shell players and not a lot of hyper-competitive sessions, Jake Bailey kept the crowd entertained by being the best bettor in the world.

What else is new, however?

TRENT BROWN IMPRESSED BY MAC JONES

It wasn’t the most competitive training in the world, as the team was only around 48 hours away from playing a game. So while the practice stats might not have been as prevalent in this one, some words from right tackle Trent Brown stood out.

The veteran lineman praised rookie quarterback Mac Jones.

“I think he can be special. There’s a lot going on for him right now. It’s a different ball game, and with Bill’s defense there are a lot of moving parts. He just needs to settle down and I think he’ll be fine, ”Brown said of Jones. “For being so young, I think he throws that few young guys can. I think it’s about settling down and knowing that you can still play the game. It’s still soccer. Yes, it’s a different level, but it’s still football. I think that goes for any rookie.

We’ll all see some of those throws Thursday night against Washington.
