LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A documentary on Michael Jackson's allegations of sexual abuse was awarded on Saturday at the Emmy Awards. RuPaul was named best reality TV host and Beyonce went home empty-handed.

"Leaving Neverland", which features two adult men who claim to have been friends with Jackson and sexually abused him from the age of 7 or 10, was named best documentary at a ceremony in Los Angeles before the main television show Emmy Awards next week.

The show, aired earlier this year, 10 years after Jackson's death, sparked the indignation of his family and allowed him to take a fresh look at the legacy of the "Thriller" singer.

Jackson's family and his estate denied the stories given by the men, calling them "recidivism of dated and discredited allegations".

Beyonce, whose "Homecoming" concert film at the Coachella Festival of 2018, was featured at Saturday's ceremony with six Emmy nominations, was beaten in all categories.

James Corden's special "Carpool Karaoke" show with former Beatle Paul McCartney back in his hometown of Liverpool took home "Homecoming" for a prerecorded variety show, while the filmed version of the famous show Bruce Springsteen's Broadway solo triumphed for special achievement.

The long show "The Simpsons" won the Emmy Award for Best Animated Series, while the gay makeover series "Queer Eye" won four awards.

"Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown", the gastronomic show organized by the famous American chef Bourdain, who died by suicide in 2018, won two Emmy Awards.

In other awards, drag queen RuPaul won her fourth Emmy as best reality show host for "RuPaul's Drag Race" and the "Free Solo" climbing film, which won the best documentary Oscar this year, added seven Emmys to his record.

The main Emmy prizes will be awarded on September 22 in Los Angeles, with "Game of Thrones" and "The Marvelous Mrs Maisel", leading the race for the best drama and the best comedy series.
